Mason Comets 15 - 3 Sycamore

May 6, 2016 - 5:00 pm

Mason showed up ready for battle today at Sycamore in the GMC season finale.  And their efforts paid off in two ways.  First, the Comets coasted to a 15-3 win over the Aviators in 5 innings.  And, following Mason’s win, Hamilton defeated Fairfield which secured the Comets a share of the 2016 GMC title.  Both Mason and Fairfield finished 14-4 in league play.  Mason moved to 17-6 overall on the season.  After hearing the good news at about 9:00 PM tonight, Coach Bly convened an impromptu celebration with his players and staff up at the field.  And, his players sent him home with a cold but memorable ice water dousing in the middle of the infield as the music blared and players dog-piled in the dark at Mason Comet Field.

Nick Northcut moved to 3-2 on the season with a complete game 5-hitter.  He struck out four.   Mason jumped out to a 4-0 lead in the first inning, and the game was never in doubt after that.  The Comets pounded out 11 hits on the day and took advantage of 6 hit-by-pitch at bats.  Key contributors on offense included:

Vince Vannelle:  double, walk, HPB, 2 RBI’s

Ben Speer:  RBI

Sam Taylor:  2 for 2, HBP, RBI

Jace Robinson:  1 for 2, SAC Fly, RBI
