Mason wrapped up GMC and regular season play this afternoon with an 11-6 win over Sycamore at home. With the win, the Comets head in to tournament play with a 17-7 overall record, 12-6 in the GMC.
The game was tied 3-3 after three innings before the Comets scored four runs in the fourth and another four in the fifth to assume control of things. Will MacLean was today’s starter for Mason, allowing just one earned run on four hits and a walk with five strikeouts in his three innings of work. With the state tournament looming, the plan was to use three to four pitchers in today’s game, to get guys some needed work but also keep them fresh. Will Pfennig (5-1) came on in relief to pitch the fourth, and picked up his fifth win of the season as he was the beneficiary of Mason’s four-run outburst in the bottom half of the inning. Rollie Sheriff (one inning, 1 strikeout) and Nick Northcut (two innings, four strikeouts) finished things up on the mound for Mason.

Mason earned a first round bye in the Division 1 sectional bracket, and will host the winner of Wednesday’sWilmington vs. Talawanda game on Thursday, May 11th.
