Mason Comets 5 - 1 Wilmington

May 11, 2017 - 5:00 pm
After receiving a first round bye in the 2017 sectional bracket, the Comets hosted Wilmington and, in a well-pitched game by both teams, Mason prevailed by a final score of 5-1.  Will Pfennig moved to 6-1 on the season with the win, allowing just one earned run on three hits over five and 2/3 innings.  Pfennig recorded ten strikeouts on the day.  Nick Northcut came on with two outs in the sixth and shut down Wilmington the rest of the way, allowing just one walk while striking out three.
Offensively, the Comets took advantage of four Wilmington errors in the game while also piecing together some quality at-bats.  Matt Deskins and Nick Northcut (two for three and two for four respectively) continued their excellent month of May at the plate.  And, Michael Hall (single, 2 RBI’s) hit two sacrifice flies to drive in a couple of crucial runs in this game.
The Comets move on to face St. Xavier in a sectional final on Thursday, May 18th at 5:00 PM at Elder High School.  This Saturday, May 13th, Mason travels up to Vandalia Butler in non-tournament action.  Game time is scheduled for noon.
